The calls you get mid-repair.

An appliance tech's phone rings while he's behind a fridge or inside a washer. Four of those calls, start to finish.

  1. 9:40 pm

    Fridge not cooling

Booked first visit Tuesday, 8 to 10 am

    Caller

The fridge is warm and it's full of groceries. The freezer still feels cold.

    Jake

Keep the doors shut. A closed fridge keeps food safe about 4 hours, so move the milk and meat to a cooler with ice. I have you first thing tomorrow, 8 to 10.

  2. 7:25 am

    Washer won't drain

Booked Wednesday 10 am to 12, with both photos on the order

    Caller

The washer stopped mid-load. It's full of water and a code is flashing.

    Jake

Can I text you a link? Send me a photo of the code on the display and the sticker inside the door, so the tech knows the model before he comes.

    Booked

  3. 12:15 pm

    Call-out fee

Booked Thursday 2 to 4 pm

    Caller

What do you charge just to come out and look at it?

    Jake

The diagnostic visit is $85, and it's credited to the repair if you go ahead. Most repairs run $150 to $400 with parts. Thursday afternoon works?

    Booked

  4. 5:20 pm

    Repeat repair

Warranty visit booked Friday 9 to 11 am

    Caller

You fixed my dryer last month and it's squealing again.

    Jake

That repair is inside our 90-day warranty on parts and labor, so I'm booking it as a warranty visit. Is Friday morning good?

So the tech brings the right part.

Jake asks what a good dispatcher asks, so the tech knows the brand, the model and the symptom before he leaves the shop.

  1. Which appliance, and what brand? If it's one you don't repair, the caller hears it now.

  2. Can you text a photo of the model sticker? It's inside the door, on the frame or behind the bottom panel.

  3. About how old is it, and is it still under the maker's warranty?

  4. What is it doing, and is there an error code on the display?

  5. For a dryer or a range: gas or electric?

  6. Where does it sit: the kitchen, the garage, a stacked unit in a closet? Then the address and a gate code.

The sticker, before the visit.

The model sticker and the symptom land on the work order before you load the van.

  1. Model and serial sticker on the side wall, photographed for the tech.

  2. Frost around the air vent at the back: likely a defrost problem.

  3. Water pooled under the crisper drawers: the defrost drain may be blocked.
