Calls that come in mid-cut.

A tree crew's phone rings forty feet up, beside the chipper, at 2 am after a storm. Here are four, and what Jake did.

  1. 2:05 am

    Storm night

Dale on the line in 30 seconds, crew booked for 7 am

    Caller

The wind snapped the top out of our oak. It's hanging over the kids' bedroom.

    Jake

Keep everyone out of that room tonight. I'm getting Dale, the owner, on the line now.

    Put through

  2. 6:48 pm

    Limb on a wire

Sent to the utility, limb removal booked for Thursday

    Caller

A limb is lying on the wire to our house. It sparked a minute ago.

    Jake

Keep everyone away from it and call 911 or the power company now. They make the wire safe first. Once it's clear, we'll take the limb down.

    Utility first

  3. 9:20 am

    Price shopper

Free estimate booked Friday 8 to 9 am

    Caller

There's one stump in the front yard, about two feet across. What does grinding run?

    Jake

Stump grinding starts at $150, and the estimate is free. Dale can look at it Friday morning.

  4. 3:15 pm

    Home sale

Estimate booked Wednesday 9 to 10 am, closing date on the order

    Caller

I'm selling the house. The buyer's inspector wants the oak cut back off the roof before closing.

    Jake

Trimming usually runs $300 to $900 a tree, by size. When is closing? I'll get you an estimate this week.

What he asks before the truck rolls.

Jake asks what a good dispatcher asks, so the crew brings the right truck, the right saws and a fair idea of the price.

  1. Is anything on the house, a car or a power line right now?

  2. What kind of tree, and how big around is the trunk at chest height?

  3. How close is it to the house, the fence and the overhead wires?

  4. Can the truck and chipper get to it? How wide is the side gate?

  5. Haul all the wood away, or leave some cut for firewood? Grind the stump too?

  6. The address, a gate code, and the best number for the crew to call.

A caller's phone photo of a pecan tree split at its main fork, one half leaning over the roof of a brick house

He sizes up the tree from a photo.

The caller's photo lands on the work order: what kind of tree, how thick, and what it's leaning on.

  1. Split at the main fork: the right half could come down.

  2. Leaning half hangs over the roof, a few feet above the eaves.

  3. Pecan, trunk about 26 in: may need an Austin tree permit.
