When the door won't move.

Garage door calls come before work, with a car shut in, and after dark, with a door that won't close. Four of them, and how they ended.

  1. 6:40 am

    Car shut in

Booked today 7 to 8 am, the first slot

    Caller

There was a loud bang and now the door won't open. My car's inside and I start work at 8.

    Jake

That bang is usually a spring. Please don't lift the door by hand. Without the spring it's too heavy. I can have a tech there at 7.

  2. 10:48 pm

    Door stuck open

On-call tech on the line, visit set for 7 am

    Caller

The door went up and won't come back down. I can't leave the house open all night.

    Jake

Keep everyone clear of the door for now. I'm getting our on-call tech on the line to talk you through it.

    Put through

  3. 12:15 pm

    Price shopper

Booked Tuesday 8 to 10 am

    Caller

How much for a new spring? Or can I buy one and put it on myself?

    Jake

Please don't wind a torsion spring yourself. It holds the whole door's weight. A pair, installed, is usually $250 to $400, and the service call is $69.

  4. 4:30 pm

    New opener

Booked Saturday 9 to 11 am

    Caller

My opener is about 20 years old and it grinds every time. I want a new one.

    Jake

We install new openers, and the tech prices it on site. Is it a single door or a double?

What he asks before the van pulls up.

Jake asks enough that the tech loads the right springs and opener, and fixes the door on the first trip.

  1. Is the door stuck open or closed? Is a car shut inside?

  2. Did you hear a loud bang? That's usually a spring.

  3. One spring above the door or two? Is it a single door or a double?

  4. Is the door crooked, or is a cable hanging loose at the bottom?

  5. What opener is it, and about how old? Do the lights on the sensors by the floor blink?

  6. The address, a gate code, and a number the tech can call on the way.

  2. Cables still on both drums: the door is level and on track.

Same-day callsA car shut in or a door that won't close rings your on-call phone, or takes the first open slot today. You choose which.
SpringsJake tells callers to leave a broken spring alone, then asks how many springs the door has and how wide it is, so the tech brings the pair.
OpenersHe asks the brand, such as LiftMaster or Genie, chain or belt drive, and about how old, and gets a photo of the label on the motor.
Auto-reverseOpeners made for US sale since January 1, 1993 must start reversing a closing door within 2 seconds of touching something in its way. When a caller says theirs doesn't, Jake tells them to stop using it and books the visit.16 CFR 1211.1 and 1211.7
