Water doesn't wait for business hours.

Restoration calls come at night, when a supply line lets go or the sewer backs up and the water keeps spreading. Four of them, and how Jake handled each.

  1. 3:06 am

    Flooded kitchen

On-call crew lead on the line in 35 seconds

    Caller

The line to the fridge broke. The kitchen's flooded and it's running into the living room.

    Jake

Turn off the small valve behind the fridge or under the sink. If you can't find it, shut the main. Stay away from outlets near the water. I'm getting our on-call crew now.

  2. 6:40 am

    Sewage backup

On-call tech connected, crew booked for 8 am

    Caller

Sewage came up through the shower drain. It's on the bathroom floor and the hall carpet.

    Jake

Keep everyone and the pets out of those rooms, and don't flush or run any water. Sewage needs a crew in protective gear. I'm putting you through to our on-call tech.

  3. 10:15 am

    Insurance question

Free inspection booked Tuesday 1 to 3 pm, carrier on the order

    Caller

Will my insurance pay for this? The water heater leaked into the hall closet.

    Jake

Your carrier decides that, so I can't promise it. We bill insurance directly when your policy covers the damage, and the inspection is free. Do you have a claim number yet?

  4. 4:30 pm

    Mold after a leak

Mold inspection booked Thursday 9 to 11 am, with the photo

    Caller

We had a leak under the sink last month. Now it smells musty and there are black spots on the cabinet wall.

    Jake

Our tech can check it with a moisture meter, and that's free. About how big is the spotted area? Can I text you a link for a photo?

Six questions before the truck leaves.

Jake asks what your best dispatcher would, so the crew knows the kind of water, the equipment to load and the claim details.

  1. Is water still coming in? If it is, where's the shut-off, and can you reach it?

  2. Where did it come from: a supply line, an appliance, the AC, a backed-up drain or the rain?

  3. How many rooms, which floors, and about when did it start?

  4. Is any water near outlets or the breaker box? Is the power still on in those rooms?

  5. Who is your insurance carrier, and do you have a claim number yet?

  6. Do you own the home or rent it? If you rent, does the landlord know?

Homeowner. AC is off at the thermostat. No claim yet: she's calling her carrier tonight.
A caller's phone photo of a hallway ceiling with a brown water stain and sagging drywall, water dripping into a bucket on the carpet

He sees the ceiling before you do.

The caller's photo shows where the water is and how far it has spread, before the crew leaves the shop.

  1. Stain starts at the attic hatch, under the AC unit.

  2. Ceiling sagging about 3 feet across: the drywall is holding water.

  3. Carpet wet around the bucket: the pad is likely soaked.
