The calls a storm sends you.

A roofer's phone rings while you're on a roof, and after hail it doesn't stop. Four of them, handled.

  1. 3:10 am

    Active leak

Travis on the line, tarp booked for 7 am

    Caller

The storm took shingles off and water's dripping into the bedroom.

    Jake

If the ceiling is sagging, keep everyone out of that room and put a bucket under the drip. I'm getting Travis on the line about a tarp.

    Put through

  2. 8:05 am

    Hail damage

Free inspection booked Thursday 9 to 11 am

    Caller

Hail hit us Saturday. A guy at the door said he'd cover my deductible. Do you do that?

    Jake

We can't. Texas law doesn't let a roofer waive or pay a deductible. The inspection is free, and Travis works with every major insurer. Thursday morning?

  3. 12:50 pm

    Price shopper

Inspection booked Wednesday 2 to 4 pm

    Caller

What do you charge to fix a leak around a skylight?

    Jake

Leak repairs usually run $350 to $1,200, depending on what's letting the water in. The inspection that finds it is free. Wednesday afternoon?

  4. 6:20 pm

    Adjuster visit

Adjuster meeting booked Tuesday 10 am, claim number on the order

    Caller

My adjuster's coming Tuesday at 10. Can your roofer be there with him?

    Jake

Tuesday at 10 is open. I'll book it and put your claim number on the order. What is it?

What he asks before the ladder goes up.

Jake asks what a good roofing dispatcher asks, so every inspection starts with the leak, the storm date and the claim on paper.

  1. Is water coming in right now? Which room, and is the ceiling sagging?

  2. When did the storm hit? The date of loss goes on the insurance claim.

  3. Have you filed a claim? Which insurer, the claim number, and is the adjuster booked?

  4. Is the roof shingles, metal or tile, and about how old is it?

  5. One story or two? It decides the ladder and the harness.

  6. The address, a gate code, and whether a dog is loose in the backyard.

A homeowner's phone photo from an upstairs window of a shingle roof after hail: torn-off shingles, hail marks and a dented gutter with hailstones in it

The damage, on the order.

The homeowner's photo lands on the work order, so you see the hail hits and the open spots before you climb.

  1. Three shingles torn off, felt showing: needs a tarp before the next rain.

  2. Round dark hail hits where the granules are knocked off.

  3. Dented gutter with hailstones still in it: the storm was last night.
